Friday,15th May, the staff of the Commission of National Catholic Education, along with the staff of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, celebrated Catholic Teachers Day.

As a part of the short celebration, a brief history of the life of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, patron of Educators/Teachers. St John Baptist de La Salle was a talented French priest from a noble background who left a promising church career and his wealth to educate poor boys in Rheims. Convinced this was God’s call, he founded the Brothers of the Christian School, pioneered teacher training and new teaching methods, and opened schools and homes for troubled youth. Despite fierce opposition, internal struggles, and poor health, he remained devoted to forming good Christians. He died on Good Friday at 68, was canonized in 1900, and later named patron of schoolteachers—embodying total dedication to God’s will.
