Social Communications

Objective

The CBC Commission on Social Communications (SOCOM), in fidelity to the mission of the Church, seeks to proclaim the Gospel in the modern world through the means of social communication. Rooted in the vision of Inter Mirifica and further guided by Evangelii Gaudium, the Commission promotes the voice of the Church in the public sphere, engages with both Christian and secular media, and builds the capacity of media practitioners to serve the truth with love.

The Church recognizes media as a gift of God and a powerful instrument for evangelization (Inter Mirifica, 2). The Commission is therefore committed to fostering dialogue, mutual understanding, and responsible communication by:

  • Organizing media education and awareness programs.

  • Forming Church media professionals.

  • Promoting human dignity, truth, justice, and solidarity through communication.

  •

“We need to practice the art of listening, which is more than simply hearing. Listening, in communication, is an openness of heart which makes possible that closeness without which genuine spiritual encounter cannot occur.” (Evangelii Gaudium, 171)

The SOCOM Commission shares news, faith, social issues, and Church events to highlight the Gospel at work in the lives of people, particularly those on the margins. It enables the Church to participate in the wider conversation of society, voicing the concerns of the voiceless and encouraging responsible citizenship and advocacy for the common good.

Specific Actions

A. Information

  1. Disseminate timely and relevant Church news and moral guidance through digital platforms, print, radio, and TV, in the spirit of truth, dialogue, and service to society (Communio et Progressio, 11).

  2. Support the publication of the Catholic Reporter as an evangelizing tool inserted in the Wantok Niuspepa, promoting faith-based reflections and social teachings.

  3. Collaborate with the Catholic Bishops Conference and diocesan structures to ensure visibility of key pastoral and social concerns, particularly in matters of justice, peace, and moral integrity.

B. Formation

Provide ongoing formation in the theology and ethics of communication through:

  • Courses, workshops, and seminars on Church media and contemporary communication practices.

  • Training programs targeted at clergy, seminarians, religious, pastoral agents, youth, and laity to become effective communicators of the faith (Aetatis Novae, 11).

  • Promoting critical media literacy and ethical content creation grounded in Gospel values.

C. Liaising

Encourage constructive engagement and collaboration with:

  • Catholic and secular media institutions.
