Vatican City, 18 October 2025 — A spirit of joy and reverence fills the air in Rome as pilgrims from around the world continue to arrive ahead of the much-anticipated canonization of Blessed Peter Torot, set to take place this Sunday, 19 October 2025, at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Among the growing number of faithful are hundreds of pilgrims from Papua New Guinea, the homeland of Blessed Peter Torot, who will soon become the first lay martyr and the first saint from the Pacific island nation. The presence of the Papuan delegation, many carrying traditional bilums and wearing national colours, has added a vibrant cultural richness to the lead-up to Sunday's solemn celebration.

The Church is finalizing preparations for the canonization Mass, which will be presided over by Pope Leo XlV. The ceremony will formally recognize Blessed Peter Torot’s heroic virtue, steadfast faith, and ultimate sacrifice during World War II, when he was martyred for defending Christian marriage and religious freedom under Japanese occupation.

Vatican officials have expressed gratitude for the global response, highlighting the significance of this canonization for the universal Church. Security, logistics, and liturgical arrangements are well underway to accommodate the large numbers expected to attend.

“This canonization is not only a moment of immense pride for Papua New Guinea, but also a testament to the power of lay witness and the enduring strength of faith under persecution,” said Cardinal Ribat of Port Moresby.

As the Church prepares to celebrate the life and sanctity of Blessed Peter Torot, the arrival of the pilgrims serves as a powerful reminder of the unity of the Catholic faith across continents and cultures.
