NCD Governor Hon. Powes Parkop spoke at the Thanksgiving Mass of Saint Peter To Rot yesterday and shared deep words of appreciation for the Catholic Church.
He said that on behalf of the city, he wanted to thank the Catholic Church for its great contribution to the country, to the journey of the people, and to the nation as a whole.

Governor Parkop reminded everyone that the Catholic Church has been a part of Papua New Guinea long before independence, going back to the 18th century. He said the Church was the first to spread the Gospel of Christ in the region and that the people must express their deepest gratitude and appreciation for its long service.
He said the Catholic Church has played a very important role in lifting people, bringing them good health and services, and helping Papua New Guineans become great leaders.
Governor Parkop said the Church has helped the country many times, especially in the areas of health and education. He said this is a great testimony and a great story of the Catholic Church.
“We must give thanks, but also the Catholic Church must be proud of its contribution,” he said.
He added that without the Catholic Church, Papua New Guinea would not be where it is today. As the Governor of the Capital City, he said he can personally testify to this truth.
Governor Parkop also pointed out that when we look at the country’s Constitution, many of the ideas in it, like the Five National Goals and Directive Principles, can be attributed to the Catholic Church.
He said the influence and guidance of the Church have helped shape not only the faith of the people but also the foundation of the nation.
