The week-long workshop brought together leaders and members committed to addressing social issues and promoting peace throughout Enga Province. Among the key issues discussed was the ongoing challenge of Sorcery Accusation Related Violence (SARV), which has affected the province in recent years but is now gradually coming under control through the continuous advocacy and awareness efforts of Caritas Enga.

The training forms part of Caritas Enga’s ongoing mission to address and eradicate SARV within the province. Since 2019, Caritas Enga has been actively conducting advocacy and awareness programs across Enga Province, initiatives that are already bearing positive fruits in many communities.

The refresher training also focused on peacebuilding initiatives, the reduction of social issues, and preparations for the 2027 National General Elections. Participants were equipped with practical skills and strategies to strengthen community engagement and grassroots advocacy efforts aimed at fostering peace, justice, and sustainable development throughout the province.

While facilitating sessions on the Community Curriculum for addressing SARV, John Galmai of the Melanesian Institute emphasized the importance of unity and collective responsibility in combating violence.

“It requires a collective effort to eradicate SARV,” Mr. Galmai told participants during the training.

A total of 56 participants attended the workshop, including two councillors, seven magistrates, several community leaders, and members of the Caritas Enga leadership team. The participants are expected to conduct further training and advocacy awareness programs across the six districts of Enga Province in the coming months.

Distinguished speakers and facilitators during the workshop included His Excellency Bishop Justin Ain Soongie, Provincial Public Solicitor Luke Toke, John Galmai of the Melanesian Institute, and Fr. Elias Aiyoko, Director of the Holy Spirit Senta Par, who also provided the venue and accommodation for the training.

The Diocese reaffirmed its commitment to continue hosting workshops and training programs while working closely with communities, leaders, and institutions to promote justice, peace, and sustainable development throughout Enga Province.
