The faithful of St. Joseph Parish in Boroko gathered last Sunday, 26 April 2026, to celebrate the Holy Eucharist presided over by His Excellency Bishop Jozef Roszynski SVD, Bishop of the Diocese of Wewak. The Bishop was in Port Moresby following the Annual General Meeting of bishops and archbishops of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands held at the Catholic Bishops Conference Headquarters.
In his homily, Bishop Roszynski reflected on the image of Christ as the Good Shepherd, emphasizing the importance of listening to the voice of Jesus and responding with faith. Drawing from the Gospel, he reminded the congregation that just as sheep recognize and follow their shepherd, Christians are called to listen attentively to Christ and put His teachings into action. “When we listen to Jesus, we know His voice, we hear His voice, and we accept it,” he said, noting that faith requires not only hearing but also transformation in one’s actions and attitudes.
The Bishop further explained the profound meaning of Christ as both Shepherd and Gate. Using a vivid illustration, he described how a shepherd protects his flock by placing himself at the entrance, ensuring both guidance and safety. In the same way, Christ safeguards His people while respecting their freedom, inviting them to remain close to Him even as they navigate life’s challenges.
Bishop Roszynski also encouraged the faithful to recognize the presence of “good shepherds” in their lives, those who guide, protect, and nurture their faith. He urged the congregation to remain open to God’s voice beyond the walls of the church, stressing that discipleship is a daily commitment. “We want to listen, we want to be open… and experience His care and His love,” he affirmed.
Concluding his message, the Bishop called on all Christians to become “the light of the world,” living out their faith through witness and service. His homily served as a timely reminder that true discipleship lies in attentive listening, faithful obedience, and trust in Christ, the Good Shepherd who leads His people with love and care.
