On April 26, The Most Reverend Christopher Michael Cardone, O.P., Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Honiara, presided over the celebration of the Holy Eucharist at Mary Queen of the Pacific Church.

The Eucharistic celebration, held at 8:00 a.m., brought together the Catholic faithful for the second Mass of the day. The liturgy was animated by the Upper Waigani and Heights Basic Christian Communities (BCC), whose harmonious singing fostered a prayerful and reflective atmosphere, encouraging the active participation of the congregation.

In his homily, Archbishop Cardone reflected on the Gospel of John (John 10:1–10), emphasizing that vocation begins within the family. Drawing from his personal experience, he highlights the vital role of parents in nurturing the faith of their children and guiding them to recognize and respond to God’s call in their lives.

He reminded the faithful that Jesus is the Good Shepherd who lovingly cares for His flock and lays down His life for them.“Jesus tells us today that He is the Good Shepherd, the loving, merciful, kind, and gentle Shepherd,” he said. “He is the Shepherd who sacrifices for His sheep, and the greatest sacrifice of all was His suffering and death on the Cross.”

Marking the Fourth Sunday of Easter, traditionally known as Vocations Sunday, the Archbishop highlighted the importance of fostering vocations within the Church. He encouraged young people to remain attentive to God’s call, particularly in religious life and in service to others.

“If God is calling you to a vocation and you are preoccupied with other things in life, you may miss His call,” Archbishop Cardone cautioned.

He urged the faithful to listen attentively to the voice of the Lord and to respond with courage and trust. He concluded his message by echoing the words of Mother Teresa:“God does not call us to be successful, but to be faithful.”
