Speaking during a press conference held on April 30 at the Catholic Bishops
Conference of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands, Bishop Otto Separy of
Bereina raised concerns about the growing challenges many people are facing in the
country.

He said the struggle to survive is pushing some people to migrate or even get
involved in violence in search of better opportunities.
Bishop Otto pointed to the high cost of living in urban areas, saying many people are
finding it hard to make ends meet despite the country’s rich natural resources. He
said the wealth of the country is not being shared fairly and many citizens are not
benefiting from it.
He also raised concerns about youth unemployment, noting that many qualified
young people are unable to find jobs. He said this continues to affect families and is
contributing to wider issues like poverty and rising crime rates.
Bishop Otto urged the government to focus on creating opportunities for young
people and addressing the root causes of these challenges, instead of relying too
much on loans from overseas. He warned that it is ordinary people who often end up
paying the price through taxes.
He stressed that leaders must make decisions based on moral responsibility and the
common good, not political interests. He called for fair distribution of the country’s
wealth and urged citizens to vote in the upcoming elections, for leaders who will truly
serve the people.
