In attendance were teachers from Sacred Heart Elementary and Primary schools, CBC staff, the General Secretary of the Catholic Bishops Conference Fr Giorgio Licini PIME, the Secretary for National Catholic Education Commission Fr Lawrence Arockiaraj including different media houses.
The celebration started on Thursday October 3rd with their students followed by teachers' time out on Friday October 4th, where teachers were given an opportunity to visit the Catholic Bishops Conference of PNGSI, especially the National Catholic Education Commission. This arrangement came about as most teachers needed to understand the structure of National Catholic Education Commission and how they govern the Catholic Agency schools.
This initiative aligns perfectly with this year’s Teachers’ Day theme: “Empowering Educators; Strengthening Resilience; and Building Sustainability.”
Mrs. Sabarei, the Headmistress of Sacred Heart Primary School initiated this as a way to offer her teachers the opportunity to learn about the organization and individuals responsible for their schools and other Catholic Agency schools.
“I thought it was important to organize this visit to give my teachers a better understanding of the Catholic Agency institutions,” said Mrs. Sabarei.
She also emphasized the importance of the visit, noting that not all her teachers are Catholics. Sixteen of her teachers are non-Catholics, and this experience will allow them to gain a deeper understanding of the Catholic Church and its affiliated organizations.
Mr. Vincent Sobo, the Deputy Secretary of the National Catholic Education Commission led the visit and provided an overview of the hierarchy within the Education Secretariat to enhance the teachers’ understanding.
Supporting Mr. Sobo was Christalyn Sowi, the Administration Support Officer for Religious Education, who highlighted key points about their work in this area.
“In Religious Education, we strive to collaborate closely with all our Catholic Education Coordinators across the dioceses to ensure that Religious Education is effectively taught in all our Catholic agency schools. The future of our Church lies in the minds and hearts of these young people,” Ms. Sowi remarked.
In her concluding remarks, she emphasized, “We all make a living by what we get, but it is also crucial to make a life by what we give.” This statement highlights the significance of being a dedicated teacher.
The celebration concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony and light refreshment organized by the National Catholic Education Commission as appreciation towards the teachers, then the hardworking teachers continued their program to Sogeri for a mini outdoor celebration.
