Sabama, Port Moresby: “You have crowned Our Blessed Mother with a beautiful crown. She now invites you to be a living, radiant crown by your good and holy lives,” said Fr Federico Boni, Secretary to the Apostolic Nunciature, as he celebrated the Feast Day Mass in honour of Mary Help of Christians on May 25, 2025.

The parish, nestled at a fork in the road amidst the slums of Sabama, resounded with prayers and hymns in honour of Mary Help of Christians. The crowning of Our Blessed Mother opened the Eucharistic celebration. It was celebrated by Fr Boni, with Fr Ambrose Pereira SDB, the parish priest, as concelebrant. The Legion of Mary, a mothers' group, the youth group, and various LKKs led the singing and performed lively dances during the celebration.

In his homily, Fr Boni reflected on the Gospel and encouraged the faithful to listen to the Lord and keep His commandments. He reminded them of the love between husband and wife, the foundation of the Christian family, which requires mutual trust and holiness. He invited the congregation to accept the great gift of true peace. In speaking about Mary, he encouraged the people to practise unity and peace by listening to the words of Jesus and putting them into action.

The Eucharistic celebration was followed by song, dance, games, a variety of performances and lunch. The LKKs (Liklik Kristen Kommuniti) organized themselves and everyone had plenty to eat and share.
