Buka Island, Bougainville – 12 July 2025

The Buka Atolls Deanery Catholic Men's Group of the Bougainville Diocese today hosted a significant and historic Dedication Service for the ABG (Autonomous Bougainville Government) 2025 Election, marking an important milestone in the region’s political and spiritual journey. The Dedication Mass, celebrated by Vicar General Father Polycarp, set the tone for a day of reflection and spiritual renewal. Fr Polycarp, in his homily, focused on the message from today’s scripture readings, urging the candidates and the gathered community to embody the virtues of the "Good Samaritan." He emphasized the need for humility, compassion, and a sincere commitment to serving the common good.

Following the Good Samaritan’s Example

In his powerful message, Fr Polycarp challenged the candidates to approach their leadership with the same selflessness and care as the Good Samaritan, who, in the biblical parable, went out of his way to help a stranger in need. “You must serve with humility, love, and a heart full of compassion for others,” he stated, underscoring that true leadership is grounded in these virtues.

The Vicar General also reminded the congregation that the upcoming elections are not just a political process but a spiritual journey that calls for candidates to exemplify love and kindness, not only during the campaign but throughout their leadership.

A Call for Strong Leadership Guided by Faith

The dedication service also saw a representative from the Catholic Women’s Group address the candidates, offering words of encouragement. She reminded them of the “Ten Rules of Leadership” derived from the Ten Commandments. These principles, she said, are timeless guides that can help leaders make decisions that are ethical, just, and in line with the will of God.

"Let these commandments be your compass as you seek to lead and serve the people of Bougainville," she urged the candidates. "True leadership is about integrity, accountability, and above all, love for the people you serve."

Healing Through Prayer and Unity

The Dedication Mass was particularly meaningful to the people of Lemankoa village, where recent violence and conflict had left deep scars on the community. In a touching moment, local residents expressed their gratitude for the spiritual celebration, stating that it brought much-needed healing and renewal to their hearts.

“This service has meant so much to us,” said one attendee, visibly moved by the occasion. “It is not just about the elections, but about healing the wounds that have been left by conflict. We needed this prayer, this blessing, to move forward together in peace.”

The peaceful gathering provided an opportunity for the people of Lemankoa to come together in solidarity and prayer, demonstrating the power of faith to bring about social and emotional healing in times of hardship.

A Spiritual Commitment to Peaceful Elections

In the context of Bougainville’s post-conflict journey, the Dedication Service served as a reminder of the importance of peaceful, fair, and free elections. It also highlighted the role the Church plays in promoting unity and healing within the community. With the region preparing for its upcoming elections, the event underscored the need for spiritual guidance and the commitment to justice, peace, and reconciliation.

As the service concluded with prayers for peace and the future of Bougainville, it was clear that the commitment of the Catholic community to the ABG 2025 Election goes beyond politics—it is a dedication to the values of love, humility, and service to others.

For the people of Buka Island, the historic Dedication Service was a reminder that their faith remains a central force in shaping the future of Bougainville, guiding both their leaders and their community toward a more peaceful and prosperous tomorrow.
