On Wednesday, 18th February 2026, Caritas Papua New Guinea officially launched its 2026 Lenten Appeal at Marianville Secondary School, following the Ash Wednesday paraliturgy celebrated with students and teachers.

As the Church entered the sacred season of Lent, the school community gathered in prayer and reflection, marking the beginning of a time dedicated to repentance, renewal, and deeper communion with Christ. The launch of the Lenten Appeal within this liturgical context invited students and staff to embrace almsgiving as an essential expression of their Lenten journey.

The program was led by Caritas Papua New Guinea’s Communications Officer, Ms. Isabella Saleu, who shared with the students the mission and ministry of Caritas within the life of the Catholic Church. She explained Caritas’ role through the Catholic Bishops Conference of Papua New Guinea & Solomon islands (CBCPNGSI) and outlined how the Lenten Appeal supports pastoral and social outreach initiatives across the country, particularly among vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Ms. Saleu also highlighted how funds collected are administered responsibly and transparently, making tangible differences in the lives of individuals and families in need. Reflecting on last year’s generous contributions, she expressed gratitude for the faithful support shown by Catholic communities and encouraged students to participate wholeheartedly in this year’s appeal as an act of faith and solidarity.

He reminded them that Lent is a sacred opportunity to grow closer to Christ through prayer, sacrifice, and acts of charity. He also encouraged them to remain diligent in their studies, seeing their education as part of God’s plan for their future and their service to the wider community.
