Alotau, September 27, 2025 – A historic and deeply moving ceremony took place in Alotau, marking the ordination of Bishop Jacek Tendej as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Alotau-Sidea. The event, which took place in the presence of clergy, faithful, and distinguished guests, ushered in a new chapter for the local Catholic Church. The ordination was presided over by Bishop Rolando Santos as consecrator and His Eminence John Cardinal Ribat, and His Excellency Archbishop Maurizio Bravi, Apostolic Nuncio to Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, as co-consecrators. In his address to the congregation, the Apostolic Nuncio underscored the great responsibility and calling of the episcopal ministry, offering both words of gratitude and encouragement to the new bishop.

"Bishop Jacek, you have been chosen by the Holy Father for your deep spirituality, practical wisdom, and pastoral dedication," said Nuncio Bravi. "Your ministry is a great gift to this diocese, and we pray that it will be fruitful and enriching for the glory of God and the well-being of this community."

The ordination ceremony also provided an opportunity to express gratitude to the outgoing bishop, His Excellency Bishop Rolando, who had served the diocese for over 14 years. Bishop Rolando, having reached the canonical age for retirement, was lauded for his generosity, dedication, and deep love for the people of Alotau-Sidea. The Apostolic Nuncio acknowledged Bishop Rolando’s significant contributions, stating, "Your example of life and your generous service to this community will not be forgotten."

The ceremony was a reminder of the profound role that a bishop plays in the Church. Nuncio Bravi emphasized that the ministry of a bishop is not only one of leadership but also one of profound love and service. "Bishop Jacek," he said, "you are called to be a teacher of truth, a sanctifier, and a guide for your flock. But above all, you must love them, just as a good father loves his own children." The Nuncio urged the new bishop to embody the spirit of Christ’s selfless love and to extend that love to all, especially the marginalized, the elderly, the sick, and young people.

The Nuncio’s message resonated deeply with the faithful present, reinforcing the essence of episcopal leadership: service through love. "To love is already to serve," he noted, invoking Christ’s ultimate sacrifice on the cross as the ultimate example of loving service.

In addition to the heartfelt homily, the ordination ceremony included prayers, hymns, and liturgical rites that highlighted the sacredness of the moment. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Apostolic Nuncio imparted a special blessing from Pope Leo XIV, expressing the Pope’s personal prayers and greetings for Bishop Jacek and the entire diocese.

The ordination of Bishop Jacek Tendej marks the beginning of a new era for the Diocese of Alotau-Sidea, and the community is eager to support their new bishop in his mission to lead with love and serve with compassion. The faithful left the church inspired and united, encouraged to continue walking in the footsteps of Christ, under the leadership of their new shepherd.

As the Catholic community of Alotau-Sidea embarks on this exciting new chapter, all eyes are on Bishop Tendej, who, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, is set to lead the diocese with wisdom, faith, and a deep commitment to service. The community looks forward to a future full of spiritual growth, hope, and solidarity in the love of Christ.
