Our Lady of Fatima Shrine declared as Highlands Regional Shrine

Kewabi Parish, Muli, Mendi: The Catholic Diocese of Mendi had a historic celebration to commemorate the occasion of Our Lady of Fatima Shrine officially becoming the Highlands Regional Shrine.

The celebration signified two important events; the declaration of the shrine to become the Highlands Regional Shrine and the celebration of the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Present at the celebration were the Catholic faithful from the different dioceses within the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Mt Hagen and friends from other dioceses.

The mass was presided by Archbishop Douglas Young SVD as the main celebrant with Bishop Donald Lippert OFM Cap, Bishop Paul Sundu, Bishop Arnold Orowae, and the custodian of the sanctuary Fr. Damian Szumaski MSF as the con-celebrants.

In his homily, Archbishop Douglas Young SVD highlighted the important role of a mother.

“If you have a mother, you have everything but if you have lost your mother, then you have also lost everything, however, regardless of whether we have our earthly mothers or not, we are blessed to have a motherly figure – Mother Mary”

Archbishop Young concluded his homily by encouraging the faithful to always have devotion to Mother Mary and be open to experiencing miracles in life.

The occasion also had the Black Madonna image presented to the shrine by two Polish Priests who came from Ukraine where they are currently serving to PNG for a pilgrim visit.

The pilgrim started in Morobe province on Palm Sunday of April 2nd and ended at Muli on May 30th .
