HOLY CROSS – 24TH MAY 2026: The Catholic Archdiocese of Solomon Islands today joined the Universal Church in celebrating the Solemnity of Pentecost, one of the most important feasts in the Catholic calendar, commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the birth of the Church.

Hundreds of faithful gathered at Holy Cross Cathedral in Honiara for the 9:00am Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Archbishop Christopher Cardone OP, Archbishop of Honiara, assisted by Bishop Peter Houhou and Deacon Levi. The solemn celebration was further highlighted by the presence of the newly elected Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Hon. Matthew Cooper Wale, together with his family, who joined the faithful in prayer and worship on this important feast day.

The liturgy was animated by parishioners from Auki and Buma communities living in Honiara, whose vibrant singing, traditional expressions of worship, and joyful participation brought a spirit-filled atmosphere to the Cathedral celebration. In his Pentecost homily, Archbishop Christopher Cardone OP reflected deeply on the readings of the day taken from Acts 2:1–11, 1 Corinthians 12:3b–7,12–13, and the Gospel of John 20:19–23.

The Archbishop reminded the congregation that Pentecost is celebrated as the “Birthday of the Church” because it marks the moment when the frightened disciples received the Holy Spirit and were transformed into courageous witnesses of Christ. “After the death of Jesus, the disciples were afraid and remained locked in the upper room. But when the Holy Spirit came upon them, they were filled with joy, courage, and new life,” Archbishop Cardone said.

He explained that through the power of the Holy Spirit, the Apostles began speaking in ways that people from different nations and languages could understand, symbolizing the unity of God’s people.

“The language of the Holy Spirit is a language of peace rather than war, reconciliation rather than conflict, cooperation rather than competition, forgiveness rather than hatred, hope rather than despair, friendship rather than fighting, and unity rather than division,” he said.

Archbishop Cardone stressed that the same spirit of unity and peace is greatly needed in families, communities, the Church, and the nation today. He encouraged the faithful to become instruments of peace and reconciliation and to work for the common good of all people, especially the poor, the sick, and those who are suffering. The Archbishop also reminded Catholics that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are not meant for personal gain, but for service to others and for building up the Body of Christ.

At the conclusion of the Mass, Prime Minister Hon. Matthew Cooper Wale addressed the congregation briefly and thanked the Church for its continued prayers and spiritual support for the nation.

The Prime Minister humbly requested the faithful to continue praying for the Government as it carries out its responsibilities in serving the people of Solomon Islands. “We continue to serve you; we are your servants,” Prime Minister Wale said.

The Pentecost celebration concluded with joyful fellowship among the faithful, reflecting the unity and mission of the Church inspired by the Holy Spirit.
