DBTI, East Boroko: The shrine of Mary Help of Christians was graced with the presence of Bishop Francis Meli, the Bishop of Vanimo Diocese on Sunday the 14th of April, 2024 as the Catholic Church celebrated the third Sunday of Easter. The Bishop was the presiding celebrant, assisted by Fr. Ariel Macatangay, sdb.
During his homily, Bishop Meli emphasized on the meaning of Easter. He stressed that the risen, ‘transformed Jesus’, should be a beacon of transformation for a united church.
“Our faith should be for us to become an instrument of God’s peace.”
Bishop Meli gave an anecdote during his homily of an experience where he went to a remote part of Papua New Guinea – Telefomin, which is in Sandaun Province. He traveled to a village and when he arrived there, he was welcomed by a number of people from that village. He later found out that the people that welcomed him were not all Catholics, but from different denominations as well.
Bishop Meli added that it is important that all Christians must be united despite our denominations and religions or races because this promotes peace in our families, communities, and societies as a whole. This is what we must aim for.
The liturgy was led by the Couples for Christ family choir who added an atmosphere of prayer, praise, and thanksgiving.
The Bishop of Vanimo was in Port Moresby with other Bishops from PNG and Solomon Islands for the Annual General Meeting that is held every year at the Catholic Bishops Conference.
