The ceremony started with a procession of the University Council, official guests, and academic staff, led by the Oro Students Provincial Group. Dr. Gigil Marme, the master of ceremony, guided the event, beginning with the National Anthem and Pledge, performed by Ms. Gabriella Minut, a first-year MBBS student.

The ceremony continued with a Bible reading and prayer led by Fr. Vincent Agbeyome-Akpah, SVD, the Madang Campus Chaplain and Director of Founders Mission and Identity. His prayer helped set a thoughtful mood for the day.

Archbishop Douglas Young, SVD, Chairman of the University Council, gave the welcome address. He congratulated the graduates and acknowledged their hard work in reaching this important achievement. Archbishop Young emphasized that education is not just about personal success but also about using that knowledge to make a difference in the community.

“Education is the foundation of transformation. Today, as you graduate, you do not simply mark the end of a chapter, but the beginning of a greater mission to serve, to lead, and to be the light in the world,” Archbishop Doug said.

Professor Fr. Philip Gibbs, DWU President, also addressed the graduates. He encouraged them to take what they have learned at DWU and use it to overcome challenges and create a positive impact in their future careers and lives.

Hon. Kessy Sawang, MP, Rai Coast Open Member and Minister for Labour and Employment, was the keynote speaker. She spoke about the importance of education, especially for young women, and the role graduates have in creating equal opportunities and advancing social progress in Papua New Guinea. Her words were inspiring, encouraging graduates to take on leadership roles.

“The road ahead may not always be easy, but it is filled with endless opportunities. Graduates, I urge you to step into your futures with confidence, for you have been equipped not just with knowledge, but with the power to change lives,” Hon. Sawang said.

The ceremony included the presentation of special DWU awards to students who showed outstanding academic achievement and leadership. Then, degrees, diplomas, and certificates were conferred to the graduates.

Ms. Patience Hahambu, a graduate with a Bachelor of Environmental Health, gave the valedictory address. She thanked professors, family, and fellow students for their support during their journey. She encouraged her peers to continue striving for excellence and to use their education and values they gained from DWU to make a positive difference.

The ceremony concluded with a closing prayer from Fr. Vincent Agbeyome-Akpah, SVD. The graduates then marched proudly in the recessional to mark the end of the ceremony.

Afterwards, invited guests enjoyed lunch in the Staff Dining Room, while graduates and their two guests were treated to a meal in the Student Dining Hall. The day was filled with joy and pride as everyone celebrated the accomplishments of the graduates.

The 43rd Graduation Ceremony was a wonderful way to honor the hard work and dedication of Divine Word University’s Class of 2025. As the graduates begin their professional journeys, they leave DWU ready to make a positive impact on their communities and the world.
