Diocese of Goroka Empowers Youths against Drugs & Alcohol Abuse with Awareness Workshop

Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province: The Diocese of Goroka successfully conducted a three-day youth workshop focusing on Drugs and Alcohol awareness (Alcoholics Anonymous), Laws on Violence and Abuse recently. The program brought together 50 youths from different parishes across the diocese, demonstrating a strong commitment to nurturing informed, responsible, and faith-centered young people.
The workshop was facilitated under the leadership of Mr Steven Pagalu, the Diocesan Family Life Coordinator, who guided participants through interactive sessions aimed at addressing some of the most pressing social challenges affecting young people today. Topics covered included the harmful effects of drug and alcohol abuse, the importance of personal responsibility, understanding legal consequences related to violence and abuse, and the role of youths in promoting peace within families and communities.
Mr Pagalu emphasized that the workshop was designed not only to educate but also to empower youths to make positive life choices and become agents of change in their parishes and in society. He encouraged participants to take the knowledge gained back to their communities and support their peers through awareness and advocacy.

Participants expressed appreciation for the practical and life-changing nature of the program. Ms Bella from Kainantu Parish shared that the workshop was timely and relevant, especially for young people facing peer pressure and social challenges.
She noted that the sessions helped participants better understand the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of knowing the law, while also strengthening their faith and moral values. She added that such programs give youths confidence to stand up against violence and abuse and to live more responsible lives.

The three-day workshop concluded on a spiritual high with a Holy Mass celebrated by His Lordship Bishop Valentine Gryk SVD. In his homily, the Bishop encouraged the youths to remain strong in their faith, uphold Christian values, and use their knowledge and talents to serve others.
He commended the Diocese for its proactive approach in addressing youth-related issues and reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to walking alongside young people in their journey.
The Diocese of Goroka continues to prioritize youth formation through faith-based education and social awareness programs, recognizing young people as vital contributors to the future of the Church and the nation.
