Suir, Bougainville: “May we always look up to Mother Mary to inspire us to be servants of God’s people”

These were the words of Sr Daisy Anne Lisania Augustine MSC, the Social Communications Commission Secretary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands in her address to the Bikpela Kristen Komuniti of Vakugo gathered at the Tekoknih Ascension Parish.
During a recent pastoral visit for formation programs to the Diocese of Bougainville, the SOCOM team visit Ascension parish in the Suir District on Wednesday August 13, 2025.
The little parish is nestled along the Emperor Range on the northern end of Bougainville and is two hours from Kokopau Town. It is also the only parish in the district with two mass centers at Tsunpets and Estosia.
The SOCOM team’s visit coincided with the Our Lady of Fatima’s image visit to the Parish where she was for the month of August. During this time, each BKK spent a week indulging in prayer, reflection and receiving catechesis to help the people in their spiritual journey. Our Lady of Fatima is currently in visiting all parishes in preparation for the 125 years of jubilee of the diocese.
The brief program began with the SOCOM Secretary’s talk and ended with a thanksgiving Eucharistic mass celebrated by Parish Priest Fr Louis Lobosi.
Sr Daisy’s short but inspiring talk was centered around being servant leaders to God’s people in the family, parish, community and society as a whole.
“Before visiting your beautiful parish, I was reflecting on what topic I would share with you to inspire you in your spiritual journey and I was inspired by the life of Mother Mary, therefore, that is what I will be sharing with you”

She particularly drew inspiration from the story of Mother Mary visiting her cousin Elizabeth who was pregnant with John the Baptist.
“Mother Mary’s visit to Elizabeth is teaching us to be humble servants of God despite whatever problems or challenges that come our way in life. Mother Mary was also pregnant, yet, she went to Elizabeth and that alone is a great example for us to follow, not just for us women, mothers and girls, but it is for everyone. When we humble ourselves and put others before ourselves, we receive more graces from the Lord and Jesus himself was a great communicator and example of this humility”
During the mass, Fr Louis reflected on being witnesses of Christ’s life and love in the community by doing good to others.
After mass, the Parish Pastoral Council warmly welcomed the team and expressed gratitude to Sr Daisy for encouraging them through her talk.
Parish Chairman James Taviroen thanked the team for visiting and said that this was the first time a commission from the Catholic Bishops Conference of PNGSI reached out and visited them in the periphery.
