Erima, Port Moresby: The Catholic Professional Society of Papua New Guinea held a Dedication Mass on Saturday, February 8, 2025, in alignment with the Archdiocese’s Jubilee theme: Journeying Together from Darkness to Light. This special gathering marked a significant spiritual renewal for the Society, reinforcing its commitment to serving the Church and the wider community with faith and devotion.
The Mass was celebrated by Fr. Ambrose Pereira, SDB, who delivered a heartfelt homily encouraging the congregation to continue their service to the Church and the people. Serving as the concelebrant was Fr Edward Ante from the Catholic Theological Institute, Bomana.
Father Ambrose’s message emphasized courage, strength, peace, and joy in carrying out their mission. He reminded the congregation that their contributions, no matter how small, are valuable in building a stronger faith community and ensuring that the message of Christ reaches all corners of society.
The liturgy included two readings. The first reading highlighted the importance of peace in radiating the love of God to others. It stressed on the fact that true inner peace enables us the Children of God to reflect God’s love in our actions, fostering unity and understanding among people. The Gospel reading reminded the congregation that despite life’s challenges, Jesus is our Shepherd and calls us to “Come, rest for a while and pray.” This was a powerful reminder for every faith-gathered people during the mass that, Jesus is the strength and comfort during times of hardship, guiding individuals through life’s difficulties.
Fr. Ambrose built on this by asking the question, “What can we do to reach out to others”? He urged the Catholic Professional Society to reflect on how their skills, knowledge, and resources could be used to bring light to those struggling in darkness. He encouraged them to see their professional and personal lives as opportunities for evangelization, sharing God’s message through acts of kindness, generosity, and justice.
He further inspired the congregation with the story of St. Josephine Bakhita, a woman who endured slavery yet never lost her faith, hope, and kindness. Her unwavering belief in God served as an example of perseverance and devotion. Despite the cruelty and hardships she faced, she chose forgiveness and love over resentment, becoming a beacon of hope for many. Fr. Ambrose emphasized that her story is a testament to the transformative power of faith and the ability to rise above any challenges with grace and blessings from God.
Fr. Ambrose also spoke about the nature of commitment, explaining that “Covenants are for people, while contracts are for things.” Putting into highlight the work of the Society and each contribution from each individual. Saying what they give is “a Covenant Love” just like God’s love for humanity is eternal and unconditional. He reminded them that they should never forget that their dedication will always be out of a Covenant love rather than on a contract basis.
It demands the total giving of oneself in whatever profession, work, or relationship we find ourselves. Married couples are to give, not 40-60% or 50-50% rather, 100-100% to each other and for each other. It is a ‘covenant’ relationship, one giving to and for the other, unlike a contract where something is given in exchange for something. It is about giving of oneself, one’s gifts and talents without expecting a return.
The Mass concluded with a light lunch, providing an opportunity for Society members to reconnect and reflect on their shared mission. Many of them juggling multiple responsibilities, including family and professional commitments, making such gatherings essential for strengthening their community bonds. Conversations during the meal were filled with laughter, encouragement, and jokes.
The Catholic Professional Society remains dedicated to journeying from darkness to light, guided by faith, love, and unwavering commitment to service. As they continue their work, they are reminded that their efforts, no matter how small, contribute to the greater good, bringing hope and transformation to the lives of those they serve.
