ALOTAU–SIDEIA Celebrates Bicentenary of Blessed John Mazzuconi, PIME Martyr
ALOTAU — The Catholic Diocese of Alotau–Sideia marked the bicentenary of Blessed Giovanni Battista Mazzucconi, one of the foundational missionary martyrs of the Catholic Church in Papua New Guinea, with a Eucharistic celebration at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Sunday, 27 September 2026.
Born on 1 March 1826, Blessed Mazzucconi was an Italian priest of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME). He is remembered for his missionary zeal and for giving his life in proclaiming the Gospel.
The observance began at 10:30 a.m. at the monument dedicated to Blessed Mazzucconi, where incense was offered in his honour. The faithful then proceeded to the Cathedral in procession, accompanied by traditional dancers.
The Mass was presided over by His Excellency the Most Reverend Archbishop Maurizio Bravi, Apostolic Nuncio to Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands. Concelebrants included His Eminence Sir John Cardinal Ribat, MSC; Archbishop Anton Bal; Bishop Rozario Menezes, SMM, President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands; Rev. Fr. Lawrence, General Secretary of the CBC PNGSI; Rev. Fr. Stefano Mosca, PIME, Provincial Superior; and priests from PIME and the Diocese of Alotau–Sideia.
The liturgy incorporated the rich traditions of Milne Bay. Traditional dance accompanied the offertory procession, while the choir of Sacred Heart Secondary School led the liturgical animation. Bishop Rozario Menezes reflected on Blessed Mazzucconi’s life, sacrifice and missionary witness.
Rev. Fr. Stefano Mosca expressed gratitude to the Diocese, Church leaders, religious communities and lay faithful for their collaboration. The celebration concluded with a solemn recessional procession and the distribution of pamphlets, booklets and prayer cards on Blessed Mazzucconi’s life and spirituality.
The gathering also allowed the local Catholic community to renew its commitment to missionary discipleship, prayer, service and the courageous proclamation of the Gospel in Papua New Guinea today with hope and fidelity.
Brief Life of Blessed John Mazzucconi
At the age of 14, he entered the seminary and was ordained a priest in 1850. He was one of the first members of the Seminary for the Foreign Missions, which was established that same year and which was to become known as PIME, the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions.
Blessed John Mazzucconi, PIME’s first martyr, was sent to Oceania with four other priests in 1852. They replaced the Marists to serve among what the Institute called “the most neglected and primitive of peoples.”
Almost immediately upon arriving, Fr. John contracted malaria and suffered greatly from almost daily fevers. Conditions were extremely harsh. However, he and his companions did not complain, despite hostility from the people of Woodlark.
Weakened almost to the point of death, he was sent to Australia for convalescence. He eagerly returned to the mission, not knowing his companions were either dead or had abandoned the mission. He was martyred with all the crew of "La Gazelle," presumably on September 25, 1855, in Woodlark Bay. He was proclaimed Blessed by Pope John Paul II on February 19, 1984, and his feast is celebrated on September 25.
The bicentenary was not merely a commemoration of a birth two centuries ago, but a renewed summons to missionary courage, to go beyond fear and comfort, in the spirit of him who crossed seas to proclaim Christ even unto the shedding of blood.
May his example continue to inspire the Church in Papua New Guinea to become courageous witnesses of Christ.
